Queen Silvia opens a child advocacy centre and receives an award

On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 September, Queen Silvia visited Heidelberg, Bensheim and Wiesbaden in Germany. Her trip included commemorations to mark the World Childhood Foundation’s 20th anniversary.

On the Thursday, The Queen attended the opening of Germany’s second child advocacy centre. The formal opening ceremony was held in Heidelberg University’s main auditorium. During the ceremony, The Queen gave a speech. The Queen and the President of Germany’s wife Elke Büdenbender then made their way to the new child advocacy centre.

Childhood’s child advocacy centres are for children who are thought to have been victims of violence or sexual abuse. The centres are adapted to meet the needs of the children, and all the people the children meet there – such as police investigators, prosecutors, social services, psychiatric services, forensic medicine personnel and healthcare workers – are specially trained.
The relevant authorities work together on-site so that the child does not need to be passed from place to place, repeating their account of the trauma over and over again.

In the evening, a dinner was held at Heidelberg Palace to celebrate Childhood’s 20th anniversary.

On the Friday morning, The Queen continued her programme by attending Childhood Germany’s board meeting. The Queen then travelled to Bensheim where she received the Karl Kübel Prize.

The Karl Kübel Foundation recognised The Queen’s commitment to the children of the world through the creation of the World Childhood Foundation. During the award ceremony, The Queen gave a speech.

The day then concluded with The Queen and other representatives from Childhood travelling to Wiesbaden, where they were received by Minister President of Hesse Volker Bouffier.
